I intend to present a progress report at every
PARTS meeting between now and the contest. These
are roughly the milestones:
November
- First Schematic
- Volunteers needed to take responsibility for various parts of process
December
- Venue established and locked in
- Language proponents designated
- Sources of up-front money established
- First prototype of electronics
January
- First prototype of entire robot completed and tested
- Order long leadtime parts
February
- Order most parts mid-month
- Initial marketing and sales effort
- E-commerce site set up to take orders
March
- Kitting party!
- Distribute kits by mid-month
April
- Continue marketing and sales
May
- SRS Contest on 4th
- PARTS Contest on 19th
Customers
The kit will be targeted toward the first-time roboticist.
It should therefore be as complete and self-contained as possible,
yet have lots and lots of room for expansion so as to provide
a challenge even for an experienced user.
Cost
- Kit, complete with servos, for $50. Absolute max $75.
Prototype kit
We expect to create a half-dozen or so prototypes before full-scale
production.
Production volume
Production runs of 100 units are actually the most economical.
Price breaks generally occur at 25, 100, and 500, so it doesn't make
sense to make an runs of more than 100.
- Initial production run of 100 units
- Second production run of 100 units, given sufficient demand
- Additional units in increments of 25
Order fulfillment
- E-commerce site set up to take orders
- Kitting party sometime in March
Funding
- Funded, up front, by individuals
- Electronics, PCBs, Chassis, Basic compiler are all funded
- Up-front money still needed to buy the Servos
Documentation
- Assembly guide
- Web Site
- Component sources (for components not included, if any)
